Avila Beach – On Monday, May 20, 2024, the County of San Luis Obispo will begin work on the Avila Beach Drive at U.S. 101 Operational Improvement Project, located at the intersection of Avila Beach Drive, Shell Beach Road, and U.S. 101.

The project improvements consist of three main components: a single-lane roundabout at the U.S. 101 southbound off-ramp, a Park & Ride with Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and Avila Trolley transit stops at the southwest corner of Avila Beach Drive and Shell Beach Road, and traffic calming improvements and increased site visibility at the U.S. 101 northbound off-ramp. The roundabout will ease current traffic delays at the intersection by improving efficiency throughput for drivers.

Additionally, the project will incorporate improvements to multimodal access and safety, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike lanes to support pedestrian and cyclist mobility. Included in these improvements is the construction of a shared-use path below the U.S. 101 overpass, which will allow pedestrians and cyclists to bypass the roundabout.

Additional press releases will be provided in the future as construction activities progress and traffic delays are anticipated. Motorists will be encouraged to use alternate routes or modes of transportation where possible.

CalPortland has been awarded the construction contract for $13.8 million to perform the work. The project is funded through various state and federal grant funds administered by Caltrans and County-local funds. It is anticipated that the project will take 20 months to complete.
